The Exploring the Blue Economy for Youth Workers Training program is designed to equip participants with the knowledge, skills, and leadership capacities needed to engage effectively in the sustainable ocean economy. Through an interdisciplinary and practical approach, the course introduces the principles, policies, innovations, and social dimensions of the Blue Economy — emphasizing the balance between economic growth, environmental stewardship, and social inclusion.
Participants will explore how sustainable ocean-based industries such as fisheries, aquaculture, tourism, maritime transport, marine biotechnology, and renewable energy can drive socio-economic development while protecting ocean ecosystems. The program aligns with global sustainability frameworks, including SDG 14 (Life Below Water), the European Green Deal, and international conventions on marine resource management and climate action.
The course consists of six interconnected units:
-
Foundations of the Blue Economy — Introduces the concept, principles, and scope of the Blue Economy, highlighting its role in promoting sustainable and inclusive ocean-based growth.
-
Sustainable Marine Resource Management — Focuses on balancing human needs with ecosystem health through responsible resource use, marine protected areas, and pollution prevention, guided by international agreements and community-based practices.
-
Policy and Governance in the Blue Economy – Examines governance frameworks, policy coherence, and multi-level coordination at national, regional, and international levels to support effective ocean governance.
-
Innovation and Practical Solutions – Explores emerging technologies, data-driven tools, and financial mechanisms that enable innovation, circular economy principles, and sustainable project development in the Blue Economy.
-
Strategic Empowerment for Future Leaders – Builds leadership, advocacy, and management capacities for participants to become agents of change in sustainable ocean governance.
-
Integration of Social and Environmental Dimensions – Highlights the importance of inclusivity, equity, and environmental sustainability in designing holistic and resilient Blue Economy initiatives.
Through interactive workshops, applied case studies, and collaborative learning, participants will develop practical strategies to support youth engagement, community empowerment, and sustainable marine development. By the end of the course, they will be prepared to lead and contribute to innovative, inclusive, and environmentally responsible Blue Economy initiatives across local, national, and international contexts.
