Mediterranean coastlines are undergoing profound environmental and socio-economic transformations linked to climate change and increasing human pressures. Changes in coastal dynamics, marine ecosystems and land use are creating significant challenges for coastal planning, tourism development and the long-term sustainability of coastal territories. At the same time, Mediterranean countries are facing the need to reconcile economic development with environmental protection and adaptation strategies.
This lecture focuses on the governance and management of coastal areas in a context of environmental change and growing pressure on coastal and marine resources. It presents the role of Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) as a framework for supporting more coordinated, sustainable and forward-looking approaches to coastal development. The lecture also introduces participants to key policy and planning tools used to address coastal challenges in the Mediterranean region.
Particular attention will be given to regional experiences and cooperation initiatives developed within the framework of PAP/RAC and the UNEP/MAP – Barcelona Convention system. Through examples from Mediterranean countries, including Morocco and Croatia, the lecture will highlight practical approaches related to coastal planning, institutional coordination, marine spatial planning and adaptation measures.
The session will also explore how regional collaboration, technical cooperation and capacity-building can contribute to strengthening coastal governance across the Mediterranean. By combining regional experiences, policy perspectives and applied examples, the lecture aims to encourage a broader understanding of sustainable coastal management in a changing climate context.
