Session Description

As coastal zones face compounding pressures from human expansion and climate change, traditional hard-engineering solutions are often insufficient and environmentally disruptive. This session explores the operationalization of Article 8 of the ICZM Protocol, centered on the legally binding 100-meter coastal setback zone and ecosystem-based spatial typologies. Participants will analyze how natural ecological processes from watershed dynamics to dune systems and urban green infrastructure can serve as active protective buffers. The session reviews practical applications, including the ADRIadapt/MedAdapt climate repositories and urban surface water interventions in Pula and Split, while detailing specific marine and terrestrial indicators used to monitor coastal resilience over time.
