1.3 Learning Objectives
- First Part: This session is designed in line with the Erasmus+ Quality Standards for Learning Activities, emphasizing participant-centered, inclusive and engaging educational methods. By applying non-formal education tools—such as visual mapping, guided reflection, and group interaction—the session aims to transform complex legal frameworks into accessible knowledge and inspire active participation in ocean governance.
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
- Recognize the role of key international legal instruments (UNCLOS, CBD, BBNJ) in protecting the marine environment and promoting sustainable use of marine resources.
- Understand the institutional ecosystem behind marine protection, including global (IMO), regional (OSPAR, HELCOM, Bucharest Convention), and EU-level approaches.
- Reflect critically on the intersections between marine law, climate change, and biodiversity, and how these relate to Sustainable Development Goals (especially SDG 14 – Life Below Water).
- Appreciate the value of legal literacy and youth engagement in solving global environmental challenges, especially in cross-border and high seas contexts.
- Engage confidently in discussions around ocean governance and feel empowered to contribute to decision-making processes through informed dialogue and advocacy.
This learning experience fosters not only knowledge acquisition but also personal development, intercultural awareness, and democratic participation, core to the spirit of Erasmus+ and essential for nurturing a generation of environmentally responsible global citizens.
- Second Part: By the end of the session, students will be able to:
- Recognize the role of key international legal instruments in protecting the Mediterranean Sea and its coastal regions.
- Understand the institutional framework that supports and coordinates the efforts of the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention in implementing this complex legal system.
- Explain the process involved in developing international legal instruments, with a particular focus on the specific provisions and requirements of the ICZM Protocol under the Barcelona Convention.
- Critically reflect on the intersections between marine law, climate change, and biodiversity.
- Appreciate the importance of legal literacy and youth engagement in addressing global environmental challenges, particularly in cross-border and regional cooperation contexts.
